What is a social media strategy…. and where do i start?

When you are running a small business, you often wear many hats. From business development and admin work all the way to management and sales. Somewhere in between, social media posting can get lost in the mix.

As a digital marketing expert for over 10 years, I can confidently tell you not to stress. Are there companies who are selling out due to their beautifully curated and “influencer” pushed social pages? .. yes, but is that you at this stage? Most likey no.

Our access to online platforms as a consumer and a creator creates both positive and negative impacts. For the consumer, a positive is shopping at our fingertips. A negative, it may be hard to create genuine connections and receive honest reviews. As a creator ( or small business owner ) the positive, these platforms are free to use and create community. The negative, you have to keep up to date with trends and create something that people actually want to engage with.

So how do you leverage yourself, as a small business owner in an ocean of like-minded creators, as the expert in your field? Keep it Real.  Showcasing your skills, educating about your services and entertaining your audience. These three tips are the beginning of creating a social media strategy that sticks.

Don't let the title of Social Media Strategy scare you. Just like anything in life, once you have a plan of action it makes it much easier. Figure out where you are wanting to go, and how you will get there. That’s step one.

Step two is identifying your audience and creating your content pillars. You need to actively think about what you are trying to say and who you are trying to reach. Use the three tips above when you are ready to start talking about your business and simply repeat them in your feed to create a pattern and a plan.

Starting small to get into a habit of posting will elevate so much stress. Focus on once or twice a week. Then once you get comfortable, you can build from there.

Remember this is SOCIAL media, so use your stories to connect with your customers on a social level. I would always recommend curating your posts however to keep in alignment with your pillars and branding guidelines. Think of your stories as a place to connect and your posts as a place to inform. Your feed, when used correctly can be a wonderful “shopping page” for your clients. How can you help people and why should they work + buy from you.
